About this scholarship

The Dr Tracy Westerman Aboriginal Psychology Scholarship Program aims to foster the development of the next generation of clinicians committed to researching and delivering evidence-based, best practice into our high-risk communities.
This scholarship supports and encourages Indigenous people to further their education and to help train future psychologists to make a real difference in regional and remote communities.
As a proud Njamal woman from the Pilbara region of Western Australia, Dr Tracy Westerman's vision is to support students with remote and rural connections through their university studies with the aim of becoming Aboriginal psychologists skilled in Indigenous-specific mental health and suicide prevention and intervention programs.

Value
The Dr Tracy Westerman Aboriginal Psychology Scholarship will provide the following support for up to one year (based on a full-time study load)

A total value of $10,000 paid as a cash stipend of $5,000 per semester. The amount may be used at the recipient's discretion to contribute towards payment of their course fees, or for other education-related expenses such as text books and/or general living expenses.
Payments occur post census date each semester approximately late May and mid-September

Eligibility criteria
- Indigenous Australian
- Enrolled full-time (75+ credits) in a Psychology Undergraduate or Postgraduate Course at Curtin University in 2019
- Willing to attend fundraising events in relation to the Dr Tracy Westerman Scholarship Program
Conditions that need to be met to keep your scholarship
Recipients must meet ALL of the following:
- Maintain an enrolment of full-time per semester (75+ credits) in the course that they received the offer of the scholarship at Curtin
- Pass all units attempted
Scholarship continuity is subject to meeting satisfactory academic progress as outlined above. Progress will be assessed at the end of each study period. Unless there are exceptional circumstances, a recipient with unsatisfactory progress or who breaches the scholarship conditions shall be ineligible to retain the scholarship.
Exceptional circumstances must be forwarded to and shall be at the discretion of the Scholarships Office.
Changes to enrolment
Leave of Absence is not permitted.
Withdrawal or Terminated from units or course: A recipient who withdraws from their units or course of study, or has been terminated from studies will become ineligible for continuation of the scholarship, will not receive any further payments and will be required to repay to Curtin University the stipend awarded for that study period if applicable.

Step 3: Submit

Closing date is listed at ther top of the page and within the Scholarships Channel on OASIS

Incomplete applications will not be assessed

Once submitted, application status will change to submitted
Step 4: Receipt

Application receipt will be sent to student email once application has been submitted
Step 5: Assessment

Applications will be assessed by an assessment panel including Dr Tracy Westerman, or a representative selected by Dr Tracy Westerman, using the following criteria:
- Responses to questions in application form
- References including references from individuals with considerable cultural standing in the recipients community
- Preference will be given to regional and remote applicants who have clear intentions to work in regional and remote communities following the completion of their degree
- Preference will be given to Master of Psychology students and those working directly in clinical and treatment intervention
Step 6: Outcome

Outcome sent via the Scholarships Channel within 6-8 weeks of the scholarship closing date

All unsuccessful and successful applicants will be notified
Step 7: Acceptance

Successful applicants must accept the terms and conditions via the Scholarship Channel (Student OASIS) by the deadline

Scholarship will be awarded if there are applicants of sufficient merit

Scholarship will commence from the semester of study for which the scholarship was awarded

Scholarship is not transferrable to another major, course or university

Taxation
Generally scholarship money paid to full-time students is not treated as taxable income, however if your study load is less than 75 credits (part-time) your scholarship money is not tax exempt. Other than the full-time study requirement, the general rule is that scholarships are exempt from taxation unless:
- It is a condition of the scholarship that a recipient is required to undertake activities that are of use, help or benefit to the scholarship provider - then the student is rendering a service by agreeing to undertake those activities;
- An award is received by a student where the scholarship is not provided principally for educational purposes.
- During or upon completion of the degree for which the scholarship is awarded a recipient is required to become, or shall continue to be, an employee of the funding body; or
