About this scholarship

Curtin University is seeking candidates for a fully-funded PhD student scholarship, as part of a Geoscience Australia – Curtin University research project on Pb isotopes. The Lead Isotopic Mapping of Australia (LIMA) project aims to develop Pb isotopic mapping throughout the Australian continent as a mechanism to spatially track geological processes. Pb isotopes provide an important tool in a wide range of applications to track geological processes through time and space. Pb isotopic signatures are sensitive to melting, fractionation, magma mixing, crustal contamination, and mineralization. This project will combine two approaches for Pb isotope analysis: 1) in-situ analysis of minerals which do not contain uranium and will retain a Pb isotopic signature unmodified by radiogenic ingrowth (such as K-feldspar), and 2) analysis of whole rock materials which opens up the possibility of a wide range of sample materials being suitable for analysis. The successful candidate will receive full training in relevant analytical techniques, using state-of-the-art instrumentation, and join a vibrant research community. The project will provide opportunities to work on geological problems that span continental-, to regional- to deposit-scale, and with colleagues and collaborators from academia, government geoscience agencies and the exploration industry.

Applicant requirements

  • Must have a BSc Hons (first class) or Masters (by research) in geoscience by the time of appointment.
  • We expect a solid background in geological processes and geochemistry (LA-ICPMS, clean laboratory and/or wet chemistry expertise is especially valuable).
  • The candidate requires the ability to work both independently and with a broad range of people from diverse backgrounds, as well as evidence of strong oral and written scientific English language competencies.
  • The candidate requires a demonstrated commitment to publish results in scientific journals. Evidence of research experience, academic awards/publications/presentations at conferences is desirable.

This scholarship provides a living stipend of $28,597 p.a. pro rata indexed, based on full-time studies, for up to a maximum of 3.5 years.

Tuition fees offset support for successful international applicant.
