About this scholarship

The purpose of the Women in Finance and Economics Scholarship is to encourage and assist women to enter, re-enter and achieve leadership roles across financial services. The scholarship is funded by the Office for Women, Prime Minister and Cabinet and facilitated by the Financial Planning Association.

The Financial Planning Association® (FPA®) is the primary membership organisation for financial planning practitioners who want to master the practice of financial planning, and who are committed to shaping the future of the profession. 

As part of this continued commitment to excellence and with support from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet’s Office for Women, FPA wish to provide meaningful equity opportunities for our students in pursuing finance and economics education.

The Women in Finance and Economics Scholarship will provide the following support for the duration of an eligible course:

  • Cost of student contribution fees or
  • Travel bursaries subject to approval by the Financial Planning and Association (FPA) for travel related to financial services internships for up to one year*

*Successful applicants who wish to pursue travel related to financial services internships can contact the Scholarships Office for arrangement 

Scholarship Details

  • Bachelor of Commerce (Finance Major)
  • The accredited Financial Planning course - Bachelor of Commerce (Finance and Financial Planning Double Major)
  • Master of Commerce (Finance Stream)
  • Master of Finance

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to apply for the Women in Finance and Economics Scholarship: 

  • Australian or Australian Permanent Resident
  • Identify as female
  • Commencing an eligible undergraduate degree or postgraduate degree at Curtin University in semester 1 or trimester 1, 2022
  • Must not be an undergraduate applicant previously enrolled in a Tertiary or Diploma level Finance and Economics course
  • Demonstrate financial hardship and of low socio-economic status

Application process

Step 1: Access online application form

  • Applications are to be submitted using the online application form. Access the form by clicking on the ‘Apply Online’ button on the top right-hand side of this page

Step 2: Complete

  • Complete the application form online
  • Application form can be saved at any point of the process
  • Multiple scholarships can be applied for at one time
  • Tips on how to complete your application can be found under the Applying for scholarships link on the scholarships website

Step 3: Submit

  • Closing date is listed at the top of the page
  • Incomplete applications will be assessed as unsuccessful
  • Once submitted, application status will change to submitted

Step 4: Receipt

  • Application receipt will be sent to the email address provided when you created your Curtin account, once your application has been submitted

Step 5: Assessment

  • Applications will be assessed by an assessment panel using the following criteria:
    • Responses to questions in application form
    • Financial hardship and socioeconomic status
    • Preference given to applicants for the following criteria:
      • Re-entering the workforce
      • Mature age (50 years of age plus) or young age (between 16 and 35 years old)
      • Residing in a rural/remote area
      • Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander only)
      • New migrant

Step 6: Outcome

  • All successful and unsuccessful applicants notified of their outcome via the Scholarships Channel (Student OASIS) within 6-8 weeks of the scholarship closing date

Step 7: Acceptance

  • Successful applicants must return acceptance documents by deadline listed in scholarships channel on OASIS

Please note:

  • Scholarship will only be awarded if there are applicants of sufficient need and merit
  • The award and continuity of the scholarship is subject to receipt by Curtin of the scholarship funding from the industry sponsor 

Enrolment Requirements

Recipients must meet all of the following:

  • Maintain an enrolment (minimum 25 credits) per study period in the course of received offer of the Scholarship at Curtin
  • Maintain a course weighted average (CWA) of at least 60 each study period
  • Pass all units attempted
