About this scholarship

The Curtin Humanitarian Scholarship has been developed by Curtin University to support Curtin undergraduate and postgraduate students from a refugee-like background who are experiencing financial difficulty in meeting the costs of pursuing higher education.

The scholarship is in accordance with Curtin’s long-standing, formal commitment to Ethics and Social Justice.

The Curtin Humanitarian Scholarship will provide the following support for the total expected duration of the degree (based on a full-time study load of 100 credits per semester):

  • Total cost of student tuition fees (excluding the Student Services & Amenities Fees (SSAF)) and
  • A cash stipend of $5,000 per semester. The amount can be used at the recipients discretion to contribute towards educational related expenses.

Scholarship Details

  • All undergraduate degrees
  • Postgraduate coursework degrees

Applicants must meet all the following criteria to be eligible to apply for the Curtin Humanitarian Fund Scholarship:

  • Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, Australian permanent humanitarian visa holder, New Zealand citizen or an international student with any of the below:
    • The applicant has applied for a Protection visa in Australia and is the holder of one of the following visas:
      o Bridging visa A (class WA) (Subclass 010) 
      o Bridging visa C (Class WC) (Subclass 030) 
      o Bridging visa E (Class WE) (Subclass 050 or Subclass 051) 
      o Bridging visa R (Class WR) (Subclass 070) 
    • OR the applicant is the holder of one of the following temporary visas:
      o Temporary (Humanitarian Concern) visa (Class UO) (Subclass786) 
      o Temporary Safe Haven visa (Class UJ) (Subclass 449) 
      o Temporary Protection visa (Class XD) (Subclass 785) 
      o Safe Haven Enterprise visa (Class XE) 
      o Higher education Visa (subclass 573) 
  • Currently reside within Australia
  • Receive a non-conditional offer* of admission and enrol into:
    • An undergraduate degree at Curtin University in 2025 Semester 1 or
    • A postgraduate coursework degree at Curtin University in 2025 Semester 1 or Trimester 1
  • Be from a refugee-like background, or the relative/dependant of such a person, who experienced forced migration and may have entered Australia in a number of ways including:
    • Off-shore approved refugee or humanitarian entrant
    • Onshore, community based Asylum Seeker or refugee
    • Temporary Protection Visa holder, Safe Haven Enterprise Visa or Bridging Visa
    • Family reunion
    • Able to provide details of refugee background
  • Demonstrated financial hardship

*non-conditional offer:

Applicants who have received a non-conditional offer, must have fulfilled the conditions of the offer by the time the scholarship is awarded after main round domestic course offers.

Application process

Step 1: Access online application form

  • Application form can be accessed via the ‘Apply Online’ button on the top right-hand side of this page

Step 2: Complete

  • Complete the application form online
  • Application form can be saved at any point of the process
  • Multiple scholarships can be applied for at one time
  • Tips on how to complete your application can be found under the Applying for scholarships link on the scholarships website

Step 3: Submit

  • Closing date is listed at the top of the page
  • Incomplete applications will not be assessed
  • Once submitted, application status will change to submitted

Step 4: Receipt

  • Application receipt will be sent to the email address provided when you created your Curtin account, once your application has been submitted

Step 5: Assessment

  • Applications will be assessed by an assessment panel using the following criteria:
    • Receipt of an offer of a place into a degree at Curtin University in 2025
    • Responses to questions in application form
    • Demonstrated academic potential
    • Demonstrated financial hardship

Step 6: Outcome

  • Outcome will be sent via the email address listed through TISC or your direct Curtin course application after main round course offers (all successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified)

Step 7: Acceptance

  • Successful applicants must return acceptance documents by the deadline specified in the terms and conditions
  • Deferral of this scholarship is not permitted.

Please note:

  • Scholarship will be awarded if there are applicants of sufficient need and merit

Enrolment Requirements

Recipients must meet all of the following:

  • Maintain enrolment (minimum of 25 credits) each study period at Curtin University
  • Maintain a course weighted average (CWA) of at least 50
