About this scholarship

The Rio Tinto Girls+ Engineering Tomorrow First Year Scholarship supports high school students in the Girls+ Engineering Tomorrow (GET) program who accept a place at Curtin University to study Engineering.

The Rio Tinto Girls+ Engineering Tomorrow First Year Scholarship will provide the following support for up to a maximum of one year* (based on a full-time study load of 100 credits):

  • A total value of $5,000 paid as a cash stipend of $2,500 per semester. The amount can be used at the recipient's discretion to contribute towards educational related expenses
  • Guaranteed paid vacation work with Rio Tinto
  • Guaranteed mentorship opportunities
  • Networking event opportunities

*Continuation of support may be considered, subject to review by Rio Tinto

Scholarship Details

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)

Double degrees with this course are considered eligible

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to apply for the Rio Tinto Girls+ Engineering Tomorrow First Year Scholarship:

  • Australian or New Zealand Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident, or an Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa holder
  • Identify as female 
  • Selected Curtin as a preference through TISC or apply direct to Curtin by the scholarship closing date to commence the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)
  • Receive an offer and enrol full-time in at least 75 credits in the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at Curtin University in Semester 1, 2025
  • Achieve/have an ATAR of 80 or above
  • Have participated in the Girls+ Engineering Tomorrow (GET) Network (Year 11) program run by the STEM Outreach Team of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Curtin University
  • Not in receipt of any other scholarships that are externally funded and/or for the same purpose

Application process

Step 1: Access online application form

  • Applications are to be submitted using the online application form. Access the form by clicking on the ‘Apply Online’ button on the top right-hand side of this page
  • If you are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander student and would like to be considered for all scholarships (equity and merit) available in this round, we recommend that you apply for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship Program here (only one application form to complete)

Step 2: Complete

  • Complete the application form online
  • Application form can be saved at any point of the process
  • Multiple scholarships can be applied for at one time
  • Tips on how to complete your application can be found under the Applying for scholarships link on the scholarships website

Step 3: Submit

  • Closing date is listed at the top of the page
  • Incomplete applications will not be assessed
  • Once submitted, application status will change to submitted

Step 4: Receipt

  • Application receipt will be sent to the email address provided when you created your Curtin account, once your application has been submitted

Step 5: Assessment

  • Applications will be assessed by an assessment panel using the following criteria:
    • Receipt of an offer of a place into an eligible undergraduate degree at Curtin University in 2025
    • Responses to questions in application form
    • Academic merit
    • Interview performance
  • Preference will be given to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students

Step 6: Shortlist for Interview

  • Shortlisted applicants will be sent an interview date and time via the email address listed through TISC or your direct Curtin course application (late November)
  • Shortlisted applicants must be available for the designated interview time (mid-December)

Step 7: Outcome

  • Outcome will be sent via the email address listed through TISC or your direct Curtin course application after main round course offers (all successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified)

Step 8: Acceptance

  • Successful applicants must return acceptance documents by the deadline specified in the terms and conditions
  • Deferral of this scholarship is not permitted

Please note:

  • Scholarship will be awarded if there are applicants of sufficient merit

Enrolment Requirements

Recipients must meet all of the following:

  • Remain enrolled in initial course of study
  • Maintain a full-time enrolment of at least 75 credits per semester at Curtin University
  • Maintain a course weighted average (CWA) of at least 60 each semester
  • Pass all units attempted each semester
  • Not apply for or receive any other scholarships that are externally funded and/or for the same purpose whilst receiving the Rio Tinto Girls+ Engineering Tomorrow First Year Scholarship
