About this scholarship

The John Curtin Scholarship Program (JCSP) and the Don Watts High Achiever Scholarship provides the funding towards their approved international experience so that scholars can immerse themselves in another culture and learn about their field of study in a global context. The current JCSP Scholars and Don Watts Scholars who have not exhausted their travel grant funding are eligible to apply.

The travel grant will provide the following support: 

  • A total value up to $6,000 towards approved programs 

Scholarship Details

All undergraduate degrees

Eligible programs including:

  • International exchange
  • Intercampus student exchange
  • Study abroad (with non-partner university)
  • Placement or practicum
  • Study tour
  • Short term program
  • Summer School
  • Winter School
  • Conference
  • Volunteering
  • Training, workshops

If your current course of study prohibits you from having international experience due to accreditation issues (e.g. health science students), you may apply for a travel grant for domestic travel (e.g. rural placement).

Note:

  • Proposed program must be either Curtin sourced or self-sourced that align with your current course of study and/or career aspirations.
  • Scholars who wish to access the funding for self-sourced program must receive a letter of support from their course coordinator, school, or faculty confirming course alignment and significant benefits from the proposed program.

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to apply for the JCSP and Don Watts High Achiever Scholars Travel Grant: 

  • Australian or New Zealand Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or Australian Permanent Humanitarian visa holder
  • A current recipient of the JCSP or Don Watts High Achiever Scholarship
  • Proposed program will be outside of Australia or rural Australia
  • Not have exhausted their travel grant funding
  • Have been accepted into Curtin approved international program
  • Either receive credits, logbook hours, accreditation from overseas study, overseas study has been organised and endorsed by Curtin University (e.g. study tours and internships), or self-sourced program is supported by a course coordinator / school / faculty confirming course alignment and significant benefits from the proposed program
  • Overseas study must be in alignment with current course of study and be endorsed by Curtin
  • Must hold a valid passport (note - the expiry date is at least 6 months after completion of your international program to ensure your re-entry to Australia), if applicable
  • Application is received by the Scholarships Office before the conclusion of the applicant's study

Application process

How to apply

  • Apply and be accepted into the eligible international or rural program
  • Complete the JCSP and Don Watts Scholars Travel Grant online
  • Attach any required documentation. This includes:
    • a copy of acceptance letter
    • program information
    • documentary evidence for essential travel costs quote
    • a letter of support from your course coordinator, school or faculty (for self-sourced activities/programs)
  • Submit your application online
  • Application will be assessed by the Scholarships Office
  • Outcome with conditional offer will be sent within 2-3 weeks, provided sufficient information and documentation is provided in your application
  • Funds will be released to your nominated bank account after all stipulated conditions in offer are met - refer to approval email for details

 

If your application is eligible, you will be required to:

  • Read and accept the travel grant terms and conditions
  • Comply with Student Travel Procedure by receiving approval for:
    • Fieldwork Risk Assessment (FRA); and
    • Travel request via Travel Operations Portal
  • Book your flights via Curtin Travel team (if you receive funding towards your airfare)
  • Email to scholarships@curtin.edu.au:
    • a copy of the approved Fieldwork Assessment (FRA) to the Scholarships Office 
    • a copy of the approved Travel Operations Portal (TOP) to the Scholarships Office
    • a copy of confirmation of your flights after booking
    • a copy of travel grant experience reflection report within 14 days of returning to Australia
