About this scholarship

The Alcoa Bev Corless Women in Engineering Scholarship (Scholarship) has been developed to support women studying engineering.

This Scholarship has been implemented to recognise the contribution Bev Corless made to women in engineering through her work with Alcoa in Australia and as a member of Engineers Australia and Engineering Technology Group.

The Scholarship will provide the following support for up to a maximum of two years: 

  • A total value of up to $20,000 paid as a cash stipend of $5,000 per semester.
  • Potential vacation work with Alcoa
  • Potential links to Alcoa's Graduates Program

The amount can be used at the recipient's discretion to contribute towards education related expenses.

Scholarship Details

Bachelor of Engineering (Majors):

  • Civil and Construction Engineering (Honours)
  • Chemical Engineering (Honours)
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Honours)
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering (Honours)
  • Mechanical Engineering (Honours)
  • Mechatronic Engineering (Honours)
  • Mining Engineering (Honours)
  • Metallurgical Engineering (Honours)

Double degrees of these courses will be considered.

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to apply for the Scholarship:

  • Domestic student (Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, Australian permanent humanitarian or New Zealand citizen)
  • Enrolled full-time (100 credits) in the second to penultimate year of an eligible degree in semester 1, 2025
  • Have a current course weighted average (CWA) of at least 65
  • Identify as Female
  • Not in receipt of any other scholarships that are from the same funding source and/or for the same purpose

Application process

Step 1: Access application form

  • Application form can be accessed via the ‘My Studies’ tab in OASIS or via the ‘Apply Online’ button on the top right-hand side of this page
  • If you are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander student and would like to be considered for this scholarship (as well as all equity and merit scholarships), we recommend that you apply for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship Program here (only one application form to complete)

Step 2: Complete

  • Complete the application form online
  • Application form can be saved at any point of the process
  • Multiple scholarships can be applied for at one time
  • Applying for a scholarship - See guidelines and tips (including the interview preparation) on how to complete your application

Step 3: Submit

  • Closing date is listed at the top of the page and within the Scholarships Channel on OASIS
  • Incomplete applications will not be assessed
  • Once submitted, application status will change to submitted

Step 4: Receipt

  • Application receipt will be sent to student email once application has been submitted

Step 5: Assessment

  • Applications will be assessed by an assessment panel using the following criteria:
    • Responses to questions in application form
    • Academic merit
    • Passion for course and vision for career
    • Leadership
    • Interest in fields aligned to Alcoa's Career Opportunities
    • Interview performance (for shortlisted applicants)
  • Preference will be given to residents close to Alcoa operations (Kwinana, Peel and Upper South West)

Step 6: Shortlist for Interview

  • Shortlisted applicants will be sent an interview date and time via their student email in late March to early April.
  • Shortlisted applicants must be available for the designated interview time (early to mid April)

Step 7: Outcome

  • Successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified of their outcome via the Scholarship Channel (Student OASIS) within 6-8 weeks of closing date

Step 8: Acceptance

  • Successful applicants must accept the terms and conditions via the Scholarship Channel (Student OASIS) by the deadline

Please note:

  • Scholarship will be awarded if there are applicants of sufficient merit.

Enrolment Requirements

Recipients must meet all of the following:

  • Remain enrolled in initial course of study
  • Maintain a full time study load of at least 100 credit points each study period at Curtin University
  • Maintain a course weighted average (CWA) of at least 65 each study period
  • Pass all units attempted each study period
  • Not be in receipt of any other scholarship from the same funding source and/or for the same purpose
