About this scholarship
The Christopher Bise Memorial Scholarship (the Scholarship), honours the late Christopher Bise, a revered figure in mining engineering. Bise, who was on the cusp of starting a new chapter as the deputy director of the Western Australian School of Mines, left a profound impact on the field. This scholarship commemorates his dedication to mining engineering and his unwavering commitment to education and mentorship, fostering the next generation of professionals in the industry.

The Christopher Bise Memorial Scholarship will provide the following support for up to one year (based on a full-time enrolment of 100 credits per semester):
- A total of $10,000 paid as a cash stipend of $5,000 per semester. The stipend may be used at the recipient's discretion to contribute towards educational related expenses
- Potential paid or unpaid vacation work (dependant on business operations and availability)
Scholarship Details
Be enrolled in the 2nd or 3rd year in any of the following courses:
- Bachelor of Engineering (Mining Engineering)
- Bachelor of Engineering (Metallurgical Engineering)
- Bachelor of Science (Extractive Metallurgy)
Double degrees considered.
Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to apply for the Christopher Bise Memorial Scholarship:
- Australian or New Zealand Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa holder
- Demonstrate financial hardship and/or low socio-economic background
- Enrolled full-time (75 credits) in the 2nd or 3rd year of an eligible course in Semester 1, 2024
- Have a minimum course weighted average (CWA) of 50
- Not be in receipt of any other scholarships from the same funding source and/or for the same purpose
Application process
Step 1: Access application form
- Application form can be accessed via the ‘My Studies’ tab in OASIS or via the ‘Apply Online’ button on the top right-hand side of this page
- Please note that this link will direct you to the general "Equity Scholarship Program" application form. Once you submit your application, you will then be considered for all equity scholarships that you are eligible for in this round.
- If you are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander student and would like to be considered for all scholarships (equity and merit) available in this round, we recommend that you apply for the "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship Program".
Step 2: Complete
- Complete the application form online
- Application form can be saved at any point of the process

Step 3: Submit
- Closing date is listed at the top of the page and within the Scholarships Channel on OASIS
- Incomplete applications will not be assessed
- Once submitted, application status will change to submitted
Step 4: Receipt
- Application receipt will be sent to student email once application has been submitted
Step 5: Assessment
- Applications will be assessed by an assessment panel using the following criteria:
- Responses to questions in application form
• Socio-economic background
• Financial situation
• Special considerations (e.g. life challenges such as caring for a family member or medical conditions)
- Responses to questions in application form
Step 6: Outcome
- All successful and unsuccessful applicants notified of their outcome via the Scholarships Channel (Student OASIS) within 6-8 weeks of the scholarship closing date
Step 7: Acceptance
- Successful applicants must accept the terms and conditions via the Scholarship Channel (Student OASIS) by the deadline

- Scholarship will be awarded if there are applicants of sufficient need.
Enrolment Requirements
Recipients must meet all of the following:
- Remain enrolled in initial course of study
- Maintain a full-time enrolment of at least 75 credits each semester at Curtin University
- Maintain a course weighted average (CWA) of at least 50 each semester
- Pass all units attempted each semester
- Not be in receipt of any other scholarship from the same funding source and/or for the same purpose
