About this scholarship

The Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA) is a state government agency which provides funding into minerals research which delivers value to WA. Part of our remit is to provide a range of competitive scholarships to support exceptional candidates pursuing postgraduate research in any research topic relevant to the minerals industry in Western Australia. Our PhD scholarship recipients explore a range of topics from a variety of disciplines, from investigating psychosocial capital in the mining workforce to decarbonisation in steelmaking. 

·     MRIWA Odwyn Jones PhD Scholarship open to all applicants including domestic and international students, and is offered to the highest ranked PhD candidate

·     MRIWA PhD Scholarship for Women open to women PhD applicants

·     MRIWA PhD Scholarship open to all PhD applicants including domestic and international students

·     MRIWA Indigenous Postgraduate Research Scholarship open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Postgraduate students.

 

The benefits of the scholarships we provide include:

  • generous stipend support of over $41,000 per annum for up to three years of study (with the potential for extension)
  • additional support of over $5,900 for research and other expenses linked to studies
  • open to domestic and international students studying in any Western Australian university
  • offering of a suite of tailored training and professional development activities, and
  • supported in accessing relevant mentoring and networking opportunities with leading innovators operating in the minerals industry.

Scholarship Details

The successful candidate must enrol into a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program.

The successful candidate must meet the minimum academic entry requirement for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy program https://research.curtin.edu.au/postgraduate/ including the English proficiency levels set by Curtin University. 
Candidates should have: 
1. Master's or bachelor's (first class honours) degree in a relevant discipline. 
2. Language requirement (IELTS, Overall 6.5, Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening 6.0 or TOEFL, Overall 79, Reading, 13, Listening 13, Speaking 18, Writing 21).

Application process

Applicants for the MRIWA Odwyn Jones PhD scholarship must have applied for entry to a PhD program at their intended host university, and submit a completed application form and research proposal to MRIWA before the closing date.

Enrolment Requirements

Recipients must remain enroled and in good standing on a doctor of philosophy program at an eligible university.
