About this scholarship

China Scholarship Council scholarship is a joint PhD scholarship for high-achieving Chinese students to undertake their PhD with Curtin University.

Curtin University will provide a maximum 4 year Tuition Fee Offset for successful applicants and in addition, provide a Top Up Scholarship of $5,000 per annum up to four years under the CSC-Curtin Scholarship scheme. The stipend is to top up the China Scholarship Council (CSC) living allowance.

China Scholarship Council under this scheme will normally cover a return international airfare and a living stipend, prescribed by the Chinese Government for the duration of each scholarship awardee.  The expected study duration is 36-48 months for full time PhD candidates. 

Applicants are advised to apply to CSC for four years (48 months) of living allowance in order to ensure they have funding for the full duration of their Tuition Fee Offset at Curtin University.

Scholarship Details

In 2012, China Scholarship Council will select 6,000 students (Chinese citizens) to study overseas through their State-Sponsored Postgraduate Study Abroad Program.  There have been some amendments made to the selection of these students.  Please check most recent information with CSC website below.

The State-Sponsored Postgraduate Study Abroad Program is no longer limited to Project 985 and Project 211 Chinese universities but also open to qualified Chinese students and in-service staff (this will include young univesity teachers and current self-funded students already studying overseas). 

The selection pool of visiting research students will now include all Project 985 and Project 211 universities.

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship in China, candidates must submit with their application, with a conditional scholarship offer letter from Curtin University. 

To ensure interested candidates meet the China Scholarship Council application deadline in March each year, Curtin University strongly encourage students submit their online Curtin e-application for admissions no later than 31st Jan of the applying year to avoid missing the deadline. 

Scholarship Recipients must hold a conditional offer of admission and enrolment subject to the CSC award and also fulfil the entry requirements of Curtin University, including a high level of English language proficiency.   Recipients must comply with the Australian Government's English proficiency requirements for the issue of a student visa.  Recipients should be intending to pursue a Higher Degree by Research in one of the priority academic areas identified by CSC or one of Curtin University identified disciplines. However, applicants to other research areas may also be considered.

Application process

Step 1:

Applicants must find a suitable supervisor who would agree to supervise them in their areas of research via the Expression of interest form.  You can search for a supervisor here.  

Step 2:

Once you received your invitation to apply from a suitable supervisor, submit your application for admission. The admission process may take 4 to 6 weeks. Applicants will be assessed in accordance with Curtin University international sanctions compliance, controlled goods and technologies compliance, and foreign interference governance requirements

Step 3:

Once you have an offer of admission for a PhD course at Curtin, you can request a formal letter of offer verifying your conditional tuition scholarship and top up stipend support from Curtin.  To request a formal letter, email the Graduate Research school via: HDRSCH-applications@curtin.edu.au Use subject line: Request formal letter for CSC application STUDENT ID NUMBER: xx. 

Please attach a copy of your Curtin admission offer letter to expedite this process. 

Step 4:

Apply to the China Scholarship Council for consideration of a scholarship. 

Step 5:

If successful, you need to provide your confirmation of a China Scholarship Council scholarship offer to your supervisor who will attach it to a HDR Scholarship Nomination form and submit it to the Graduate Research School for review and confirmation of the Curtin top up Scholarship.
